OUISTREHAM

Musée du Mur de l’Atlantique – Le Grand Bunker

Just a stone's throw from Ouistreham beach and ferry terminal, and 5 minutes from Pegasus Bridge, the Atlantic Wall Museum is housed inside the former German army headquarters that commanded the batteries on the Orne estuary.

This unique 5,000-tonne tower of concrete and steel, towering 17 metres above the villas of Riva-Bella, has been restored and refurbished to look as it did on June 6, 1944. Over six floors, you'll discover all the rooms, which have been restored to their original functions: engine room, filter room, barracks, pharmacy, infirmary, armory, ammunition depot, map room, radio transmission room, switchboard, observation post with rangefinder... as well as areas dedicated to the elite troops and their special equipment used to defeat the Atlantic Wall.

In the museum's courtyard, discover a real assault barge that was restored and used to shoot the film “Saving Private Ryan”. The PA 30'31 barge is the one that Steven Spielberg equipped to stage this landing craft M in his famous 5-Oscar film!
