Street art in Caen – Heritage Days 2026

In the late 1960s, a new form of popular expression emerged on the streets of major American cities: graffiti.

A distant descendant of practices dating back thousands of years, it found fertile ground for its development over the following decade, a period marked by economic crisis, the birth of the hip-hop movement and a re-evaluation of traditional artistic media. Immediately opposed by the authorities, this urban art – or street art – was quickly co-opted by the mainstream art world but remains a rebellious movement.

The tour will be an opportunity to discover the artists who have made Caen their playground, the various techniques employed and the many codes that govern the practice.
