Marc Bloch's career, from his mobilisation in 1939 to his assassination on 16 June 1944, was a unique one, due in particular to the context of persecution and exclusion, the nature and constraints of his commitment, but also to his prestige and connections. We will first look at these factors, before assessing the extent to which he also remained a historian, even in hiding.
His entry into the Pantheon on 23 June 2026 provides an opportunity to show the inextricable alliance of scholarship, politics and morality embodied in his career, his historical work and his posthumous life. For history, as a method, a subject for personal reflection and a source of collective commitment, was for him, throughout his life, a form of resistance.
