A rock rising up in the middle of a vast bay, Mont-Saint-Michel and its history cannot be studied or recounted without taking this exceptional location into account. For centuries, the sea has dictated the daily lives of the inhabitants and influenced both their way of life and the building techniques used on the rock. Yet the bay’s current landscape is very different from that of the Middle Ages. It takes a certain amount of imagination to picture daily life at Mont-Saint-Michel in that distant era, when the sea’s hold was stronger than it is today and the rock was cut off from the mainland twice a day by the tides.
