Henni Alftan's work stems from a deep engagement with the medium of painting, its methods and its history, resulting in images of everyday life that are both familiar and mysteriously elusive. Born in Helsinki and based in Paris, the artist depicts scenes and objects from everyday life, often cropped or fragmented, each treated with a controlled economy of means. Despite her pared-down aesthetic, Alftan's experiments with color, texture, scale and perspective produce canvases rich in superimposed signifi cations, which also serve as metaphors for seeing and understanding the world through the physical properties of paint.
