Dominated by the abbey church of Saint-Etienne, a jewel of Roman and Gothic architecture and home to the tomb of its illustrious founder, the Abbaye aux Hommes is a central place in the history and life of the people of Caen. A self-guided tour will take you through the many rooms that make up one of the most beautiful Town Halls in France, and give you access to the temporary exhibitions.
Practical information:
October to March (closed on 25 December, 1 December and all weekends in January): Monday to Thursday 8am to 6pm, Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.30pm. Sundays only during school holidays, 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.30pm.
April to June and September (closed on 1 May): Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm and weekends and public holidays, 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm.
1 July to 31 August: Monday to Friday 8am to 6.30pm and weekends and public holidays 9.30am to 6.30pm.
Ticket sales close 30 minutes before closing time.
The abbey church of Saint-Etienne, which houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, is open daily from 9am to 6pm (2pm to 6pm on Sundays), except during religious services.
The Men's Abbey warns that guided tours on Saturdays are uncertain due to wedding celebrations.
