Built around 1060 by William the Conqueror, the Château de Caen became a favourite residence of the Dukes of Normandy, Kings of England, who expanded it into one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe. Over the centuries, the Château de Caen has been transformed into a royal fortress and then into a barracks for conscripts: each period of its history has left behind clues scattered over time. Follow in the footsteps of William and the great figures who shaped the history of this site! Discover the typical layout of an 11th-century fortified castle and the various buildings that characterise it (ducal palace, keep, Exchequer Room, herb garden, etc.). Group visits: information from the Musée de Normandie - Château de Caen
