In Ouistreham, Lionel Sabatté cuts a series of blocks of Caen stone, selected from the quarry. The sculpture, several meters high, will be a strong visual landmark on the Ouistreham pier.
A sculptor based in Normandy, Lionel Sabatté stands out for his use of raw, often unexpected materials (dust, fingernails, etc.). His work, marked by transformation, questions the complex relationship between man and his environment.
In Ouistreham, the artist sculpts Caen stone, a material emblematic of the area?s development, which he has chosen straight from the quarry. He creates an ensemble mixing aquatic and animal forms, from sea turtles to flatfish, like fossils from a lost ocean. Engraved and notched, the blocks are arranged according to cardinal points, like a compass rose, a mineral and organic compass.
