En attendant la mer – Lionel Sabatté (œuvre du Millenaire 2025)

In Ouistreham, Lionel Sabatté carves a set of Caen stone blocks, chosen directly from the quarry. The sculpture, several meters high, will be a strong visual landmark on the Ouistreham pier. A sculptor based in Normandy, Lionel Sabatté stands out for his use of raw, often unexpected materials (dust, fingernails...). His work, marked by transformation, questions the complex relationship between humans and their environment. In Ouistreham, the artist carves Caen stones, an emblematic material of the territory's development, which he chose directly from the quarry. He creates an ensemble mixing aquatic and animal forms; sea turtles and flatfish can be recognized, similar to fossils from a lost ocean. Engraved and notched, the blocks are arranged according to the cardinal points like a compass rose, a mineral and organic compass.
