William the Conqueror built the castle in 1060 and it became a favourite among Normandy dukes and English kings who made it one of the biggest medieval strongholds in Europe. It is home to the Normandy Museum and Fine Arts Museum. Please note that, since 2023, work has been underway within the castle grounds.
