By the Urban Studies Institute, Hong Kong
In 2015, a diary was discovered by chance in Hong Kong, telling a little-known story of the Normandy Landings. In it, Lam Ping-yu, the author, describes his experience in the Chinese Navy, which he joined at the age of nineteen. More than ten years later, he was one of twenty-four young officers selected by the Chinese government to train in the British Royal Navy. His first assignment was the June 6, 1944 landing at Sword Beach.
This exhibition covers several aspects: firstly, the moving story of Lam Ping-yu, but also the exploration of the links between East and West, where individual history intersects with great History. To date, Lam Ping-yu?s diary is the only direct testimony by Chinese officers to the Normandy landings.
