Exposition “La Guerre d’Alan”

In conjunction with Époque, Caen?s Festival and Book Fair, and as part of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the library is exhibiting a unique collection of original plates and preparatory materials from Emmanuel GUIBERT?s comic book album La Guerre d?Alan. In June 1994, Emmanuel GUIBERT, Grand Prix winner of the Angoulême Comics Festival in 2020, met Alan Ingram COPE, an American retiree and veteran of the Second World War, while vacationing on the Île de Ré.
They immediately struck up a close friendship. This relationship lasted until the former soldier?s death in 1999.
Alan began to tell Emmanuel about his war experiences: "He spoke well, I listened well, (?) When he interrupted his story, I suggested: let's make books. You tell the story, I'll draw". This is how Emmanuel GUIBERT brought to life the episodes in Alan COPE?s life in a graphic novel entitled La Guerre d?Alan (Alan?s War), published in 3 volumes from 2000 to 2008 by Editions L?Association, and in a complete edition in 2009.
