Presentation of a private collection of numerous original 19th-century drawings by Joseph Le Dieu, an Avranchin lawyer and "distinguished mind and friend of the fine arts, skilled draughtsman and landscape artist", and member of the Société d'archéologie, sciences et arts. It's a real stroll through the southern half of the Manche department, from Coutançais to Avranchin, that we can begin in the footsteps of the draftsman, following the itineraries of an artist working on the motif, whom we see at the bend of a drawing, contemplating a landscape or sketching it. Joseph Le Dieu's attentive and observant eye, beyond the search for the picturesque and the romantic approach of his time, gives an account of this provincial, rural and coastal society on which there is very little documentation. Aside from their archaeological and ethnographic interest, and their high graphic and artistic quality, these drawings are imbued with great gentleness and depth. Through his attachment to trees, which, particularly in his second period, are truly "staged", and his depiction of animals and field work, it is possible to evoke the Barbizon School, from Jean François Millet to Jules Dupré, Charles François Daubigny and Théodore Rousseau, who himself frequented and painted the Granville region.
