They would never have met were it not for this fictional purgatory born of the imagination of Daphné Biiga Nwanak and Baudouin Woehl. The only thing they have in common is that they were both artists in life. But they are dead and are learning to coexist in this space that straddles the line between a waiting room and a studio where they can create. By inventing this timeless liminal space, the duo – passionate about music, visual arts and cinema – have created an experimental laboratory where a Renaissance sculptor, an artist cut down in his prime, a model and a 17th-century musician rub shoulders. Drawing on Giorgio Vasari’s seminal work *The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects*, published in 1550, and the performers’ own real-life experiences, this production—which grapples with the history of art whilst remaining firmly rooted in the present—probes the artistic act and its context in depth.
Concept, direction, text and music by Daphné Biiga Nwanak and Baudouin Woehl, featuring Daphné Biiga Nwanak, Aymen Bouchou, Jonathan Capdevielle, Émile-Samory Fofana, Camille Grillères and Baudouin Woehl.
