Fun in a Viking style on Rollon’s lands? That’s the concept behind Le Valhalla tavern. Anyone familiar with Normandy’s history will appreciate the nod.

«Valhalla is the Vikings’ paradise. A place of endless feasting and fighting for brave warriors. We wanted to recreate a world where you can have fun, quench your thirst, and feast,” says Adrien Picard, one of the managers.»

A unique concept

Unique in its kind, the tavern is purposely located outside the city centre for a warm, friendly atmosphere. It was during a World Axe Throwing Championship that Adrien had the idea to create a place where you can practise target throwing safely, while having fun. Valhalla will be the first axe-throwing venue to open in France — and it’s in Caen!

By stepping through the doors of Valhalla, you enter a Viking world. The scene is set!

Axe throwing

Let’s go! The weapons master Paul — aka Polochon — explains the rules of the game. You have to throw the axe as far as possible while aiming at the target. “You stretch your arm fully, guide the axe, lift your arm but not too high.”

Players (max 5 people) take turns every 3 throws. We spice up the game by organizing a competition among friends, recording scores, and even trying different moves: reversed axe throw, one axe in each hand, one axe upright, one upside down… So many ways to test your skill. Quickly, you are offered to throw other weapons. Shovel, shuriken, dagger… in total, nearly 30 different weapons are available!
“And if throwing becomes a passion, you can even buy targets and axes, and take part in tournaments open to all, organised by Valhalla.”

Heading to Valhalla

In terms of atmosphere, you really feel like a Viking. The room’s walls are decorated with shields, axes and animal skins. The tables and stools are decked out with Viking décor and symbols. Rock music pairs perfectly with the sound of axes sticking into the wooden targets. Round tables or a big Valhalla-style banquet table — the tone is set. Here, it’s all about relaxation and conviviality! Regular entertainment is scheduled, with concerts and themed dinners.

The tasty break

After that thrill, it’s time to share a drink with friends over a platter of gourmet cheese and charcuterie.
The beers to savour come from local breweries: Brasserie des 9 Mondes, Brewmaker or Coupe-Gorge. Amber, brown or blonde, they are available bottled or on tap. You can also try ancient drinks like mead.Rums, gins and whiskies are also offered, as well as soft drinks. So, skål!
