William the Conqueror founded the Benedictine Saint-Étienne Abbey in Caen in 1063. It was consecrated in 1077 and the oldest part of it is the church. The choir was given a Gothic makeover in the 13th century and houses William the Conqueror's tomb. The monastery was destroyed during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt around a Tuscan-style cloister in the 18th century. The former monastery buildings are now home to Caen Town Hall and several exhibitions.
