La Pierre et le sablier – Vincent Mauger (Work of the Millennium 2025)

The work "La Pierre et le sablier" by Vincent Mauger, installed on the Puchot Tower of the Caen Castle, transforms the space into an exploration of time and space. Composed of metal blocks stacked at the top and a cavity carved at the bottom, the work resembles a giant hourglass, with shapes that seem to deform and flow, representing the passage of time. The blocks, made of aluminum plates, recall ancient building stones while being light and modular. A footbridge allows visitors to overlook the installation and observe its visual effect, creating a strange perception of depth. By integrating into the tower, a symbol of military power and resource exploitation, the work establishes a link between the past and the present, raising questions about time, space, and the way we use natural resources.
