Lecture “The University of Caen, a foundation of the Middle Ages

Talk given by Dominique Toulorge, agrégée d'histoire, member of the Friends of the University of Caen Normandy.
In 1432, during the Hundred Years' War, the English occupying Normandy founded a studium generale in Caen, initially with faculties of civil and canon law. In 1437, the faculties of theology, arts and medicine were added to what is now one of France's oldest universities. For more than 500 years, the university remained in its medieval location on rue de la Chaîne, now rue Pasteur. Its long history is closely linked to that of France and the rest of the world.
The destruction of the buildings in July 1944 forced the university to leave its historic site and new buildings had to be constructed: an "Anglo-Saxon" campus was created to the north of the château.
