Exhibition by Laurent Proux

Born in Versailles in 1980, Laurent Proux lives and works in Paris. He is a graduate of the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. As a painter and draughtsman, he produces powerful, original imagery that explores the tensions between the human body and its environment, whether industrial or natural.
Although the objects depicted in his paintings - machines, workplaces, trees, fields, sexualised bodies, etc. - impose a realistic style at first glance, his style emanates from it. -His style emancipates itself from this through the continual exploration of pictorial solutions, incorporating aberrations, telescoping planes and artificial colours, definitively free of the opposition between figuration and abstraction. The human body is treated in fragments, exaggerations and silhouettes, the better to bring it closer to a body-machine, politicised and violent, often disturbing, sometimes sentimental. Constructing the space of her paintings like a scene with altered legibility, the artist addresses a visual and intellectual enigma to the viewer's attention, to be surveyed with the eye.
This exhibition is presented as part of the Normandie Impressionniste festival.
