In the heart of the Vaucelles district, this dormant cemetery was opened around 1780, in a former open-cast quarry where Caen stone was quarried. By the end of the 19th century, it had become too small to accommodate the large number of burials. Historically, the parish of Saint-Jean was that of the aristocracy and notables, which explains the richness of the cemetery's funerary heritage. It is home to the tomb of archaeologist and historian Arcisse de Caumont, among others.
