The Hermanville-sur-Mer military cemetery is one of 18 to be managed and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Normandy. It lies a few miles from Sword Beach, the easternmost D-Day beach. Most of the 1005 soldiers laid to rest here are British and many of them were killed in combat on D-Day, including three French soldiers led by Captain Philippe Kieffer.
