Founded around 1063 by William the Conqueror, the prestigious Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Caen, known as the Abbaye aux Hommes, was consecrated in 1077. Its 11th–13th-century abbey church is one of the most monumental religious buildings in Normandy. The 18th-century monastic buildings (panelled rooms, paintings, staircases, cloister) now house the Town Hall.
