The Benedictine Abbey of Saint Etienne of Caen is a wonderful example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. It was founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror and still contains his tomb. The abbey was consecrated in 1077. The 18th century monastic buildings, including the cloister, the panelled rooms decorated with paintings and the Guards' Room, today house the Town Hall.
