Situated at the foot of four hills, the city of Caen stretches across the lower Orne valley.
In the Middle Ages, these hills were very commonly referred to as ‘mountains’ or ‘mounts’. The Sépulcre, rebuilt in 1761, retains a Romanesque section; the church, once circular, housed a fragment of the True Cross before which all the people of Caen would kneel on Good Friday.
The Vaugueux suburb, though well hidden, is not unknown to tourists; it is, in a way, our own Place du Tertre.
