Born in Bénouville, or the story of a maternity home – As part of the 2026 Journées du Matrimoine. Film screening, discussion and exhibition.
Transformed into a ‘departmental maternity home’, Bénouville Castle provided a home for nearly fifty years to thousands of children and young women who came there to give birth in secret. This documentary looks back at this institution and sheds light on a little-known chapter in the history of women’s lives and the violence suffered by single mothers and their children.
Followed by a discussion with Olivia Gay focusing on testimonies relating to this place.
