Modesty – Group exhibition

To mark the 40th anniversary of L’Artothèque de Caen, the exhibition *La modestie*, curated by Thomas Lévy-Lasne, brings together 27 artists who prioritise humility over spectacle, and restraint over bombast. From Françoise Pétrovitch to Nathanaëlle Herbelin, from Jean-Philippe Delhomme to Mathieu Cherkit, the exhibition highlights these contemporary artists’ focus on the here and now.
From wild grasses to cows, from toys to soaps, from urban vegetable gardens to industrial estates, the works on display explore the ordinary, everyday world of appearances. These works breathe new life into, intensify and make desirable what we are given to see.
Whilst we now know that all human activity entails a degree of self-destruction and contributes to climate change, the humility of contemplation and a certain contentment with existence might perhaps help to shape a desirable way of living, one capable of keeping us alive.
