Lecture – Understanding the world: the United States, from promise to democratic doubts – two centuries of American history put to the test at the ballot box

The Caen Memorial invites you to a new lecture on Thursday 29 October at 7.00 pm: “Understanding the world: the United States, from promise to democratic doubts – two centuries of American history put to the test at the ballot box”.
From the Founding Fathers’ democratic promise to the challenges facing contemporary America, this lecture traces two centuries of American political history through the lens of elections. To mark the mid-term elections, historian Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, journalist Alain Frachon and Amy Greene, a political scientist at the Institut Montaigne and lecturer at several universities, will share their perspectives on the developments, tensions and major electoral events that have shaped American democracy.
Hosted by Thierry Geffrotin, a journalist and former editor-in-chief of the culture section at Europe 1, this event aims to provide a better understanding of how the history of the United States continues to shed light on the democratic challenges of the present day.
Admission is free, subject to registration. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live on the Caen Memorial’s YouTube channel, where it will subsequently be available to watch on demand.
