From smartphones to self-driving cars, science fiction has not only predicted the future: it has shaped our desires. Discover how pop culture directly influences the way we consume.
Science fiction is much more than mere entertainment: it is a mirror that shapes our daily lives. By depicting imaginary technologies, films and novels create expectations, hopes and also very real fears amongst consumers. It is these representations that guide our choices, whether it be our enthusiasm for futuristic gadgets or, conversely, our mistrust of innovations such as GMOs.
An original analysis of the impact of the imagination on our economic behaviour, presented by Sarah Letailleur, a PhD student at the ‘Normandy, Innovation, Market, Business and Consumption’ (NIMEC) laboratory in Caen.

Le Dôme invites you to discover the “Rendez-vous avec” series, a programme of fascinating talks led by young researchers from Normandy to mark the 35th Science Festival in Normandy. Participatory research, society, the environment, history or health… Each session offers a lively glimpse behind the scenes of current research, explained with clarity and enthusiasm. Join us from 2 to 12 October 2026 at libraries and media centres across Normandy to ask questions, share ideas and learn in a friendly atmosphere.
On the programme for this edition, themed ‘Saveurs savantes’ (Scholarly Flavours), are nearly 100 events hosted at around forty venues and led by PhD students who will travel the region to meet the public and explore the challenges of food in the 21st century, ranging from the chemistry of flavours to sustainable agriculture, via public health and culinary technologies.
Organised with the support of Science Action Normandie and the departmental libraries of Calvados, Eure, Manche, Orne and Seine-Maritime, the 2026 programme for “Rendez-vous avec” features nearly 100 events. You’re sure to find one near you!
