By Pauline Launay, sociologist and anthropologist at the Espace de Réflexion Éthique de Normandie (Caen University Hospital).
Funerals, commemorations, farewells, shared memories: rituals always accompany the final passage from life. But what do they teach us about our relationship with death, the dead and memory? What do we do with the body? What do we do with memories? Who looks after the dead? How do the dead continue to live amongst the living? Drawing on the ethnographic accounts of Pierre and Hélène Clastres on the Guayaki Indians of Paraguay in the 1960s, this event explores what human societies have in common when faced with the loss of a loved one.
