Choro Do Mar brings together five musicians from Normandy to perform choro, a form of Brazilian folk instrumental music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century.
Choro is the result of a fusion between African and European musical traditions. It is distinguished by its fast, syncopated rhythms and its bright, emotive melodies. It is also characterised by improvisation around the melody and the interactions between the musicians.
On stage, this quintet presents a lively and warm repertoire, performed on instruments emblematic of choro: the seven-string guitar, the cavaquinho, the transverse flute and Brazilian percussion instruments typical of choro such as the pandeiro, the tantã and the ganza.
The group invites the audience on a musical journey blending Brazilian tradition with freedom of interpretation.
