Café Maritime: 80 years of shipbuilding at Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie

Founded by Félix Amiot in Cherbourg in 1946 as part of his move from the aeronautical industry into shipbuilding, Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie has launched more than 200 vessels. Ships of every type, size and purpose, ranging from sailing school dinghies to 54-metre-long tuna vessels, as well as missile patrol boats and luxury yachts.
This talk aims to provide an overview of this production, focusing on the most iconic vessels built at the Cherbourg shipyard, whether for their technical characteristics, the number produced, or their impact on the history of CMN, from the trawler Annie in 1948 to the Tara polar research station in 2024.
Justin Lecarpentier, documentary writer, director and historian, will present the history of Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) and its naval achievements. This will be followed by a discussion with the participants of this maritime café.
This Caen Yacht Club Maritime Café will take place on Thursday 15 October from 6.30 pm to 8 pm at the Bassin Saint-Pierre, 2 Quai de la Londe, Caen. A contribution of €3 will be requested, and drinks will be served after the presentation.
