Small exhibition #9 “Model Children?”

The ‘Little Exhibition’ #9 explores representations of childhood in toys and advertising, drawing on the collections of the Musée de Normandie. How are children portrayed in games or in catalogues? What roles, expectations and stereotypes do these images convey?
Reproduced on toys and in adverts, they project a vision of childhood specific to each era. Whether portrayed as well-behaved or boisterous, dreamy, cheerful or idealised, children become at once a reflection of social norms, a new player in consumer society and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the imagination.
Drawing on around fifteen objects from the museum’s collections – early learning and role-play toys, vintage posters and advertising materials – this small exhibition explores the image of the child since the 19th century.
