Designed around a residency in the region and an exhibition as part of the Normandie Impressionniste Festival, Atlas Normandie presents the work of Nelly Monnier and Éric Tabuchi. Photographers and visual artists, the two artists combined their practices to launch the ARN (Atlas des Régions Naturelles) project in 2017, setting themselves the task of photographing 450 natural regions of France.
The term "natural region" or "country" refers to small territories whose boundaries, based on their natural characteristics, are difficult to define, as opposed to the administrative departments created by the French Revolution. While it is impossible to define their exact shape, their boundaries - physical and geological, but also historical and cultural - continue to draw, in a sort of oral tradition, the contours of a geography that is still very much alive.
They have criss-crossed these territories to explore not only the landscape, but also the cultural ways in which it is inhabited and transformed.
