Since the Renaissance, artists have been interested in the horizon, a shifting line that questions our perception and representation of the world. Sometimes an illusion of depth, sometimes a frontier, the horizon structures our vision and experience of space. From classical perspective to digital creations, art explores this theme in multiple forms.
The exhibition, which opens with The Marriage of the Virgin by Perugino (1504), brings together some one hundred works from the 16th to the 21st century: Dürer, Friedrich, Courbet, Sugimoto, Ristelhueber, Mouraud, Dean? Drawings, videos, installations and engravings interact with rare treatises on perspective dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Between symbolism, poetry and politics, this journey crosses the entire museum, right up to the permanent collections, to question what the horizon means today, in the age of digital technology and space travel.
