During his residency at L'Artothèque, Samuel di Gianni returned to his installation practice, put on hold since graduating from ésam in 2022. Drawing on their physical and formal interconnections, he has created a series of works rooted in a relationship with memory and childhood reminiscences. From the family home and surrounding garden, he extracts forms and atmospheres that nourish his graphic and sculptural productions.
The notions of heterotopia and "alagablettir", sacred places in Icelandic mythology, are summoned up and confronted with his own mythology, in which childhood reveries and fantasies mingle. Favoring building materials such as slate, stone, wood and steel, the works in volume evoke familiar forms - portico, low wall, staircase, roof... - but strongly imbued with a sense of strangeness. This sense of dull disquiet also permeates the photographs and drawings, in which the beginnings of uncertain narratives are sketched out.
