États Dames is a rendez-vous with ladies. The ladies of the Abbaye aux Dames, north of Caen, which is the counterpart of the Abbaye aux Hommes at the other end of the city, both expiatory works of the ducal couple William of Normandy and Matilda of Flanders.
"For the Etats Dames exhibition, I produced photographs, drawings and sculptures related to the abbey church and cloister, giving a new visibility to the works that inhabit them. I've combined this with a series of works on paper and glass made in 2015 from photographs of the royal recumbents I had taken at Saint-Denis Abbey, in particular those of the queens of France, who will come into dialogue with the abbey?s ladies." - Véronique Sablery
